In January of 2017, I ventured up to Canberra on the mighty Hume highway to Summernats car festival with the plan to create a photography series that looks at the good, the bad, and the ugly of this long standing pilgrimage of car enthusiasts from all over Australia. I was lucky enough to camp with some great folk who offered their keen insights. Through this experience I was able to find a new understanding of this incredible sub-culture, though the festival is not without its downsides. A certain mob rule takes over the infamous 'Tuff street', which in outsider's eyes may be hard to comprehend: "tits out for the boys" is the chant. To most, it's harmless fun. Other girls find themselves circled by large groups of men who refuse to take "no" for an answer. My series looks at some of these elements, without forgetting this is only a small part of the event. There is also so much good that happens at Summernats: the bringing together of friends and family for the chance to share a common love of cars and burnouts. Cheers to some of the rad people I met - and anyone I photographed drinking beer from a shoe, thong, condom, or worse!
